Another upside: much cheaper if you are an impoverished student.

Another downside: you look cheap.

Seriously, though, I think they are definitely a good way to go, especially if you have the time to do it right, and especially if you are looking for a gift for someone who never gives good hints for what they want.

Actually, my thing is more that most standard gifts seem, well, standard. And as such, I dislike using them because they could really be from anyone. When it's worth a present, it's worth putting a personal stamp on it.

Granted, "doing it right" can be another thing entirely. The reason for this entry looks cheap precisely because I have no skill with spray glitter. But live and learn.

Pros: Thoughtful, cost-effective, inventive, personal, etc.
Cons: You risk illiciting the dreaded "Oh, that's cute..." response.

This is why I advocate the use of giving liquor as a gift. Just slap a bow on it and you're done.
