me, being weird as usual

i keep a constant mental list of songs that should be covered, and in a way i think of it like i'm going to be doing the covering, when in fact the closest thing i've ever been to "in a band" was playing drums with april in frank's garage for a couple of months. i am almost unaware of the fact that i think this way, even though some thought of this ( Read more... )

i keep a list like that in my head too, but more in the hopes that i can make a cd of them and give them to someone more talented than me and maybe they can cover them. or in case i'm ever in the position to hire bands i really like to cover them.

I'm sure this wouldn't be a big surprise, but I do the same thing! I don't think it's weird.

well, if any of yours seem particularly exciting you should tell me about them and we can have a whole discussion on the subject.

I do it too. We could form an imaginary cover band who never records or practices.

"i suppose there is an extremely slim chance that someday i will have an opportunity to suggest a good cover to somebody who can actually play music. otherwise, this will remain an odd little game that i play in my head."

I paid money ($50, I think) to get Yo La Tengo to play a cover, of Pere Ubu's "30 Seconds Over Tokyo." This was for a radio station fundraiser, around 1996, I think. The basic idea was, if you contribute a certain amount of money, YLT would consider playing a song you requested (theirs or anyone elses), but there was no guarantee that they would. YLT complied with my request (actually, Ira started playing Tom Herman's unforgettable opening guitar part about 2 seconds after my request was announced over the air). Even better (and stranger) Yo La played the song in a medley with "Bus Stop" by the Hollies, of all things.

That's my story of getting real musicians to play my cover song. :)

i think yo la tengo + pere ubu sounds like a great idea, though for full disclosure i must admit i know very little about the latter (well, i know about them but i don't know their music really). but anyway, that's more of a public service than anything. a win-win situation, or possibly a win-win-win situation.
