Charles(/Erik?), Protective!Raven - Asperger Syndrome [WARNING: Mental Disability] anonymous June 16 2011, 05:34:06 UTC
I’m not entirely sure I’m using the warnings correctly. If I offend anybody by posting this, I apologize. My boyfriend has Asperger’s, and I thought it would be a unique experience to read a story where Charles is similarly afflicted. As far as I know, there is no issue with ableism in this post, as it’s more about Charles accepting his disorder and learning how to live with it than being discredited or mocked for it.Charles was born with Asperger syndrome. Raven, albeit younger than him, finds herself becoming the protective older sister to a small boy who gets bullied due to his difficulty negotiating friendships. Charles can remain withdrawn and timid from years of having people insult him both verbally and mentally, or become the charismatic figure he is in the film, using his telepathy to determine what people want from him then adapting to those wishes. It’s up to the filler, but I think it would be rather unique to see how Charles' natural optimism and belief in people could be cultivated after such a rough childhood ( ... )

You're a goddess! I can't wait to see what you come up with, especially in terms of Raven's protectiveness over Charles.

*raises hand* I have Asperger's.

Fortunately for me, though, I have been reared with a very solid foundation of acceptance and support at home, and some consider me "high functioning" because I have been carefully taught how to behave (even if I still do not entirely understand the Why to this day). My personal "obsessive focus" is patterns of behavior/psychology-- From an analytical and logical standpoint, everything makes sense. Even you lovely kinky bastards here on the kinkmeme. But from an irrational, emotional view, things are confusing and muddled and ridiculous. I am curious to see how a character like Charles could be written to behave with Asperger's.

Nonnies, make it so?

My one suggestion is for the author is to please write in/work from the knowledge that there are no definite rigid symptoms of AS. Though it is a disorder on the Autism Spectrum, the symptoms and manifest behaviors vary widely from one Aspie to the next. No one Aspie has the exact same triggers for anxiety or the same interests, and not all levels of ( ... )

OP here!

Regarding what you said about the way Asperger's develops with no rigid symptoms - I know three great people who have AS and I completely agree that this fact should be included. My boyfriend has extraordinary muscle memory and adapts really well to social situations, but the Asperger's makes it impossible for him to concentrate on things that don't interest him and he has quite a high level of OCD as a result. His sister, however, finds it terrifying to be outside and in negotiating relationships with people but is absolutely brilliant with understanding complex subjects. His father is a bit of both, but avoids all conflict and sometimes finds it difficult to react normally.

Sorry for the long response, but if anything here helps the author, I'm happy to have included it. Part of why I posted the prompt was to see what people would come up with. Thanks for taking the time to check it out and providing such good responses. :)
