why I've been down

This started as an email and devolved into a response to some blog posts.

It's not just the torturing and the war and the fact that the Democrats won't let organized labor talk to new Congresspeople. It's that people who should be actively working to change the world just don't get it. There was an interesting piece in Sunday's NY Times that ( Read more... )

Sheeit. I just got back from this railside slum in Manila and I got quite the lashing. What do you say to like 30 pissed off and poor slum dwellers asking you everything from what you think about the Subic rape case to what you think about Xerox, Boeing and every other US corporation that supports a despotic regime and keeps people like them in some of the worst conditions imaginable? I thought about countering by telling them that I voted Democratic last election, but instead I just frowned, clicked my tongue and tried not to piss my pants.

Here's the problem I'm having. I just don't know what to do anymore. I got into doing the work I do because I thought that it was a [more effective than most things] way to create serious structural changes in society. Obviously not overnight, but someday.

I think I'm disheartened both by a sense of lost momentum at work and by the Democrats' victory - at the Democrats' victory because it's essentially meaningless.

I'm trying to figure out something meaningful I can do. My work used to fill that role, maybe it will again. SW told me "Get something going. Just don't kill anybody."

I feel your pain, but I am still optimistic that the new Ds will accomplish something favorable for labor. And 2008, although a world away, looks really good to me. Mostly Senate pickups. And I think that no matter who the Dem Presidential nominee is, that they will be the next President.
