Hmm Jason's POV
I come back to my room to find it quiet. Wait, quiet? Since when are Tom and Max quiet?
Oh, yeah. Max said Tom is staying in his room tonight because he doesn't feel well. But, I know Tommy...he never falls asleep alone. Why doesn't he even have the tv running or something?
I step in and immediately notice it's dark. That's the first thing that alarms me.
The second is the absence of a lump in Tom's bed but a distinct feeling that someone else is in the room with me. A robber? A murderer?
But no, it is Tommy, I see with a smile as I come around my bed to turn on the lamp. He's lying facedown on the floor, eyes closed in sleep, face pressed against the floor. I nudge him with my foot as light floods the room, muttering, "Get up, lazy ass, and get back in bed. Sick people don't do well on the floor."
He doesn't move. I start to push him with a bit more force, squatting to use my hands instead of my feet, still smirking. "Joke's over, Tommy, get your ass up."
That's when it hits me. Tommy doesn't sleep quietly, and perusing his still form, I realize he doesn't wear his sneakers or jeans when he sleeps either. My eyes widen and I start to shake him frantically, yelling, "Get up, Tom, get up!"
He's like a rock, refusing to budge, and his eyelids don't even flicker. I press my finger against his neck and gasp. His pulse is so light I can barely feel a push against my finger.
Oh. My. God. No wonder he's not snoring or sleeping in his boxers. He's not asleep, he's unconscious, and not by choice, I'd say if I had to guess.
I stand hurriedly and throw open the door to my room, uncaring at the loud bang. I run to the closest room, our captain's and pound on the door, shouting through the door that I'll break it down if it doesn't open this instant.
Danny opens the door with a yawn, rubbing his eyes, but I don't care that I prolly woke him up from a comfy nap with Ryan and that he needs his sleep to keep on his toes directing over 25 players. "Call an ambulance," I cry, eyes still wide with fear and panic.
He's immediately awake and he calls to Ryan, "Baby, dial 911! Something's wrong!"
I stumble through his room and collapse onto Danny's bed where Ryan is pulling boxers on, my head in my hands. He drops next to me and rubs my shoulder, eyes wide and wary now as he asks, "What's up, Jay? What's got you so freaked?"
I shake my head as tears begin to pool in my eyes. If Tom dies, it'll be my fault. I'm supposed to protect him, that's what a roommate does! "Tommy's unconscious in our room and I don't know why."
Danny's lips curve and he tries to make light of it. "Sure he just hasn't been drinking and passed out?"
"Not unless he was drinking cyanide. His pulse felt like a feather against my finger."
I can see he knows it's serious when a lone tear slips down my face as I stare back at him. He pats my shoulder, murmuring,"Don't worry, Jay, I'll take care of it."
Ryan comes out of the kitchen where he's been talking to the hospital and sees how stressed I am. He sits on the other side of me and rubs my other shoulder, asking gently, "What happened, Jason?"
Danny shakes his head at his lover, saying I don't have to answer. "Tommy passed out and no one knows why."
I suddenly stare at my captain fearfully. "He had some of Max's pills in the cabinet for safekeeping...you don't think?" I shudder at the thought.
He shakes his head. "No, Tom wouldn't do that. He loves life, his job, his friends, and his team too much to give up."
My eyes go wider as I remember. "Oh shit, MAX! He doesn't know!" I immediately grab my cell and dial his number, waiting for him to pick up before I mutter, "You really need to get down here, Maxim."
I can hear him thinking and I know by the gasp when he realizes it might be Tom. "Not Tommy?"
I nod, forgetting he can't see me. "He passed out, Max, and I don't know why."
I can hear sounds of him dressing quickly and turning off everything in his house. When I hear the door slam and his footsteps running to his car, I hang up the phone to his assurance, "I'll be right there."
An hour later, I'm on an ambulance with Danny, Ryan, Max, and a still-gone Thomas Vanek.
