Lupin burst through the Floo within seconds, Tonks’s distress call still rattling the innocuous-seeming pebble in his pocket. “What-oh, hell! He didn’t seem-”
“He wasn’t,” Tonks interrupted. “This isn’t his own doing.”
“No?” Lupin dropped to his knees and helped Tonks cast the remaining blood-staunching spells. He then Summoned three cups of tea.
Tonks’s smile was bitter as she sipped. “It’s going to take more than this…”
Lupin glanced at the mound of ashes a few feet from them. “I would have liked to analyse the ‘gift’ that brought this on, but I can hardly blame you for handling it otherwise.”
Tonks’s lips twisted, her free hand caressing Snape’s brow all the while. “No doubt he’ll say the same when he comes to-- but he’ll insist I should have refrained from blasting it.”
“Yes, well, look at where his lack of restraint got him. Hullo, Fawkes.”
Lupin set down his teacup and settled himself next to Tonks, wrapping an arm around her shoulders and curling his left hand around Snape’s fingers. As the phoenix hovered overhead, its tears trickling across Snape’s innumerable gashes, the unconscious man writhed as if on fire, and Tonks’s hair glowed an angry golden-orange.
