VI. The First Step

The 10th Division Taisha was nothing like Hitsugaya had imagined. After two months spent at the 5th Division he had expected things to be similar as there, but nothing could have prepared him for what he found.

The 10th Division had been without a Taichou or a fukutaichou for almost two years now, the burden of its paperwork shared between the rest of the Divisions. Why on earth had they taken that long to find someone to lead it was beyond him, but it was clear it was going to take a long time for everything to run normally.

The first thing, though, was to choose a second in command.

He looked at the files on top of his desk again and sighed. Ten candidates and none of them adequate for the task; he needed someone that could not only follow orders and fight by his side. He needed someone able to deal with his peculiar character.

An image of Aizen-taichou came to his mind, and he shook his head to clear it. After two months spent with the man Hitsugaya knew he was in trouble.

The training had been everything he could wish for and more. Aizen was patient and a good teacher, showing him everything, the ins and outs of the Division, the way to address the members of his team, how to lead a group of people and take care of them. He also taught him how to control the release of energy, and how to communicate with Hyorinmaru so he could learn the secrets of his zanpakutou.

Hyorinmaru still didn't like Aizen, but he was much less vocal about it now.

That was not the problem. The problem was that now Hitsugaya couldn't stop thinking about him. He had known before he liked Aizen, he had since the first time they met. But now he was almost the only thing he could think about.

In that sense the training months had been torture for him. Hitsugaya was sure Aizen wasn't aware of it; but every touch, every friendly pat on the back, or proud smile or any other of the thousand gestures of affection Aizen showed, made his heart jump in his chest. He was in so much trouble it wasn't even funny.

He closed the folder in his hands with a disgusted gesture and stood up. He needed some advice on that subject. Or so he told himself.

"Do I have to pick one of them or can I select my own fukutaichou?" he asked entering Aizen's office in the 5th Division Taisha. It had never crossed his mind that Aizen might not be there, or that he could be too busy to help him.

"Oh, Hitsugaya-taichou," Aizen looked up from the file in his hands and smiled. Hitsugaya's heart skipped a beat. "is there anything I can help you with?"

Hitsugaya took a sit and put the folder on top of the desk, "I need a second I command, but the candidates they choose are less than ideal," he said not looking the other man in the eye. Maybe it had not been such a good idea to go looking for him.

"Ah," Aizen stood up and walked round the desk, stopping right behind Hitsugaya and leaning to grab the folder, "I can see the problem. None of them look like a good choice for your Division."

He counted to ten, trying to stop his body from reacting to the proximity. "Can I select someone else, then?"

Aizen considered the answer for a few seconds, "Technically yes, but you need to follow the procedure and get the approval of another two Taichous, minimum."

Hitsugaya sighed; Soul Society's procedures were annoying most of the time.

"Do you have anyone in mind, Hitsugaya-taichou?"

Why was Aizen not moving away? It was difficult to think properly when he could feel his warmth so close. "No, not yet," he answered, gritting his teeth when the other man leaned over him again to put the folder back on the desk. This was getting ridiculous.

Hitsugaya scowled, annoyed at his own reaction and lack of self-control when Aizen was involved.

"If there is anything I can help you with, Hitsugaya-taichou," Aizen said smiling down at him, his face scant inches from Hitsugaya's, "you just need to tell me."

In hindsight, he should have held on to his self control longer. Hitsugaya looked at Aizen and without thinking he closed the distance that separated them. It couldn't even be called a kiss, just the brush of lips with child-like hesitancy and naiveté. But it was enough to make him jump back startled and bolt out of the room.

Oh, no, no, no. Hitsugaya repeated again and again in his mind. Why had he done that?

I don't like it. Hyorinmaru said unhelpfully.

Shut up! He snapped silently, still thinking about what he was going to say to Aizen the next time he saw him. It was probably a good idea to apologize and--

He didn't see Ichimaru Gin entering the Taisha when he left, or Aizen standing next to the window looking at him and smiling.

VII. Mind Games

Aizen stared out of his office window, following the progress of Hitsugaya Toushirou on his way out of the 5th Division Taisha. The boy was still slightly red in the face and was muttering to himself; probably arguing with his zanpakutou.

"You shouldn't play with your food, Aizen-taichou."

Aizen turned round and saw Ichimaru Gin standing next to the door. He had not heard him coming in.

"It's tastier this way," he replied, looking one last time at the vanishing figure.

Gin entered the office and took a sit, moving as if he was in his own office. He might as well have been. "I though you were going to wait a bit longer," there was no reproach in his voice; he sounded amused at his impatience.

"I was," Aizen moved finally away from the window, "it was him who took the initiative."

It had been unexpected, but he wasn't going to complain. Gin laughed.

"Him? The boy?" Gin's laugh was loud and clear, and seemed to go on forever. Aizen was feeling too complacent to be annoyed, so he let him.

"It was just a kiss, and it probably took all the courage he had," it had been hesitant, and Hitsugaya had almost bolted out of the room when he had realized what he had done, leaving a bemused Aizen behind.

"So you will be feasting on the Ice Prince soon."

It wasn't even a question, so Aizen didn't bother answering it.

The smile on his face would have shocked anyone seeing it, it was nothing expected from Aizen-taichou.

Soon.
