While Anton and Constantin didn't always see eye to eye, the success of the Stanislavski-directed Chekhovian works at the MAT made it hard for the playwright to be too upset about it. He did hate Stanislavski's performance as Trigorin in The Seagull, but as a director, despite disagreeing over style (what with Chekhov writing most of his plays as melodramas and Stanislavski staging them in quite the opposite fashion), Chekhov kind of had to accept the brilliance of Stanislavski.

In short, Chekhov kicks loads of ass, and Stanislavski can be pretentious, but he, too, rocks the casbah.
