Even after all this time it is strange to me that Luceti has no economy. It is unthinkable in my country to have a country or city, or rather a commune as I believe we could be classified, without a system of economy. I suppose it would mean less colds, but-First, let me thank all of those who participated in my call for autographs in my last ( Read more... )

[The filtering is mostly precautionary, though the question itself might be a little embarrassing. Still, Robert is certainly curious.]

The economic state of Luceti affects your health, Mr. Japan?

Also, in terms of obtaining electronics - unfortunately, it is mostly true. Sometimes the Malnosso are cooperative - for example, I was allowed to obtain my nanocomputer from home - but more often than not, it is likely that they would refuse such a request. You could attempt to ask, though.

Or I could ask for you, if you had anything in mind. [It'd give him an excuse to talk to Molly...]

He sounds like the one whom called herself Kusanagi. Though Ms. Vermillion herself seems [- ... nicer? -] different, but during that time, she was [- a horrifying monster, really -] extremely dangerous and frightening to even consider.

Something like that on Terra - it is unthinkable. Weapons in general, but something of that destructive potential to the environment and the lives of sapients? It is appalling to contemplate. Absolutely appalling. [Robert's handwriting is actually a little shaky by the end of that.]

Ah, yes, I heard about the rampage. Unlike Noel-san, Russia-san has few redeeming qualities. Had. He is better now that we are no longer at war.

I apologize. It would seem I have upset you.

[A silence for a few moments, and then Robert writes:] A friend of mine was killed in my stead during that rampage.

And it is not your fault. I just cannot understand how such destruction could be allowed to exist, much less encouraged. [And Robert doesn't even want to bring up how it might have affected Japan himself.]

As Nations, war is inevitable. It is a natural part of what we are.

[Oh wow. Um...what to say.] I am sorry, Hastings-sensei. I was unaware of your loss. Are [He pauses] you alright? Do you need something?

Have you ever wondered what it might be like if that stopped happening?

[Because Terra is basically the only place where war has stopped entirely that Robert has allowed himself to think about, anyway, and he's curious as to why. Or whether this is even fathomable.

... The rest just makes him pause for awhile, though.] I am alright, yes. The friend whom did this has returned.

I just am sorry it happened at all. He should not have died. I meant to ins

....If there were no wars? Ah...yes, I have wondered. My country has been prohibited from engaging in war other than in the event of self defense. We provide support, however, for the wars of other nations. [Like America. And America. And America.] That is all we can do.

It was a noble sacrifice. I am glad to hear he is back.

[Well, that explains Japan's behaviour during the draft...]

I suppose it is rather like protecting friends?

And I am glad too. I only wish I could repay him for such an act. But he insists there is no need.

Friends? Perhaps. It is something like that.

A sacrifice is such that it does not need repaying. Isn't that what it is for?

I suppose. But [- it still seems so grossly unfair -] with what happened, it feels as if he still deserves something for it.

At the least, recognition.

Would recognition be against his wishes?

I am not certain. Perhaps it would be.

[Robert doesn't know how to deal with this situation. Obviously, you don't usually run into having to thank people who died for your sake.]

Ah, that could be difficult.

Perhaps it is better to simply show your appreciation through actions such as helping him clean or cook or improving some part of his life.

Ah well, it is the effort that is important, not the results...?

I would think both would be important, but I am not certain.

[There are a few small dots as Robert taps the pen against the paper, almost idly. Giles is one of those people who seem, to him, like immutable pillars of strength.]

I need to become stronger, though.
