I think that they're going for a Steve/Cath wedding as the big happy-ever-after season finale if the show doesn't get renewed for S5.
I'm not a Cath-hater, but I'd actually even rather have the whole Joe White/Shelburne thing than the main ongoing arc plot be a love triangle soap opera. I fear that Danny's comment in the cinema about the 'third act' being putting an obstacle (i.e. Billy) in the way of true love before things finally all work out is a foreshadowing of where they're planning to take Steve and Cath.
I signed on to this show for the Steve/Danny partnership, and that's what I want to see. As I said, I don't actively *dislike* Cath, I'm just not that interested in what happens to her.
Why all this talk about the show not being renewed?
The Steve(Alex)/Danny(Scott) chemistry was what reeled me in, as well. I just think it strange that Lenkov, et. al. and Alex himself have been filmed saying how crucial this relationship dynamic was to the success of the show.
Now it's more comic relief and a watered down one at that.
Lenkov needs to get his head out of his ass...haven't the show's S1 ratings and the fact that Scott got nominated for a Golden Globe back then given him a clue....?
I've felt for some time that the show won't go past the fourth season but maybe if the Friday night ratings are good enough it will survive. We shall see.
For myself, I signed up for the kind of show depicted in S1, not the soppy rubbish we are being force fed now... which is why I signed off half way through the last series and now only read the fan fic.
I know it was funny and light-hearted with some good mysteries in S1. Not every episode was fantastic but the chemistry and the feeling of ohana was so strong. That's all been lost in my opinion.

The network execs must have demanded they add clear hetero love interests, especially for the handsome male lead.
I'm hoping that instead, Danny's dim views on marriage and how they never end well is the forewarning.
I will be completely disgusted if we get a Steve/Cath wedding.
