I'm reluctant to comment, as I feel like I don't fit in in this fandom anywhere any more. I LOVE Steve/Danny, it's why I started watching, they just grabbed me. But things have changed, external things beyond the 'characters' driving the story and while I really, really miss how it used to be, I'm enjoying it. Just for different reasons

Wow, 8 hours to film walking in and out of a building? Is there no more efficient way they could do it? Haha, as if I have a clue. That's cool that you got to watch

Yeah it seems so inefficient. They filmed some stuff inside the building in the AM and then walking in and out on 2 different 'days' in the afternoon.
Hopefully the Danno time can pick up again now, if he is there more than he was in July/August. The eps we're getting are very 'filled' with non-Danny and this lines up with being filmed in that time.
TBH I haven't felt like Danny isn't 'there' but that the times he has, it isn't of substance. Because it's probably stuff that's fast and easy to shoot. IDK.
I don't know how actors stand the long boring days filming the same scene over and over again so they can get the shot from many different angles. I'd go nuts.
I agree with you, it's not that Danny isn't there, it's that his scenes are so lightweight.
I think the majority of viewers are 'eyeballs' who just watch tv without thinking about it as much as I/we do and also they aren't overly loyal to their shows. Pretty fickle really. There is just so much choice these days.
They watch what they like, they try new things, DVR stuff etc. I use my parents as the barometer for normal/eyeball behaviour. My dad seeks out the shows he likes, asks me if I know when stuff is on and if he misses an episode, he doesn't really mind it's mostly not week to week. Or he nags me to DL it if he REALLY cares. Which is pretty much just NCIS and 5-0.
I guess i was spoiled by Steven DeKnight who wrote Spartacus and gave us Nagron when he saw the alchemy between the characters and actors. He gave us some strong women too. I find Catherine becoming the whiny gf she lost a lot of appeal for me.
Yeah, last season was pretty much the beginning of the deterioration of the show, for me. Lenkov only allows the bromance to pop up every few eps for fan reaction. Then, he and the other writers push THE RELATIONSHIP in our faces the rest of the time. Now, I just watch the pretty people and the fast car and tune out the rest. :(
I have to say that this is one of the most intelligent, mature discussions of what's going on with H50 that I've read in a very long time. I hope you don't mind that I add my thoughts

The essence of the show for me in S1 - and what hooked me - was the Steve/Danny partnership. If you'd asked me in S1 what the show was about, I'd have said "Two guys who found themselves partners fighting crime". From S2 onwards that has changed, and now Danny seems no more important than Chin or Kono. For me, the focus of the show changed :(
What saddens me most is that it *is* possible to add new characters and relieve the load on the core actors without losing the key partnership - for me, Person of Interest has done that in spades, and I wish Peter Lenkov had taken a lesson from the POI showrunner.
The bottom line is that the writers of 5-0 are lazy and not very talented. They simply don't know how to handle a multiple cast member show. I believe also that Steve McGarrett is the wet dream of every male writer on the show and they want him to be the unquestioned hero. Sure the others can have the occasional brief moment in the sun but ultimately it's all about Steve - even though the show didn't start that way.
It's funny you should say that about Scott and the Golden Globe nomination because I've been saying this for three years. When Scott got nominated I think TPTB at CBS freaked out because they wanted the show to be a star vehicle for Alex and Scott was (briefly) getting more attention. I think they've deliberately watered down Danny's part and focused more of the show on Steve to put the spotlight back on Alex. It must be insulting as hell for an actor of Scott's caliber.
I too started watching because of the partnership between Steve and Danny, that was seemingly going to be the focus. A lot has happened since and I think there are many missed opportunities with characters and actors. I now watch it for other reasons, mainly the ridiculous stuff that I find humorous because I don't take the show seriously any more. I really live in the McDanno fan community.
