Hello all, I'm not really all that new here, but this is my first real post. So...Hi! I'm Kate. I love Lily/James fics, obviously, or I wouldn't be here. I'm glad there's somewhere to snark about the travesties that are some Marauder fanfics. You know, the ones that make your eyes bleed.

So. I'm going to put myself out there and rant. Whether you ( Read more... )

Thanks! I've been working on it for awhile...I wanted it to be good. A lot to live up to, since everyone else's have been great so far.

I can't wait to see what you've got planned in yours! Sorry I said some of your points. Oh, well. There's a lot to be covered still.

Especially the bit about Sirius and Lily's friends. I mean, in SWM, Sirius didn't even pay attention to that chick oggling at him. Now, thats not to say he ignored every girl, but it obviously shows that wasn't what was driving his mind. He was much more than a man whore.

And seriously, how can there be a female hgroup perfectly compatable to all the Marauders? No, it just can't happen. Let them have their own obnoxious boyfriends, thx. Geez. And of course, they're all the most gorgeous girls in shool with all the boys following them. And one always is part Veela and one always has the name of a color or a spice. Ugh.

Exactly my point! He doesn't have to be a chaste little boy, but he didn't go out with a different girl every two days.

The only thing that annoys me worse than author-invented Mary Sues being Lily's friends is when they take canon characters like Marlene McKinnon, Emmeline Vance, and Dorcas Meadowes and Sue-ify them. Might as well just go with OCs if you're going to completely warp their characters beyond recognition.

You rock! I have a whole rant ready for your point about Peter. I've just been waiting for the right time to post it. Also the "Serious" joke really does make me want to poke someone's eyes out. I can't wait to read the parody.

Hee, thanks. Can't wait for your rant about Peter. I just don't understand why authors seem to forget that he was at one point very good friends with James, Sirius, and Remus. He hasn't turned to the dark side yet.

...That sounds so Star Wars.

It's very true about Peter--for one thing, James and Lily picked him over Remus because they suspected Remus of being the traitor more so than Peter! How dodgy can the boy be if they want him to be their secret keeper over the traditional "third best pal" Remus?

And I've just had the horrible image in which Lily has side buns in her hair, and James has just discovered that she's his half sister! *Shudder*

in this timeframe, he is still friends with the Marauders.

I have a whole rant ready for your point about Peter.

We must be great minds, because we think alike *g* I hate the traitorous little rat, but he's a character with his own personality and backstory, and we must respect it.

And, something I always say when this thing comes up:
He was NOT a tagalong. You DON'T trust a tagalong with your life.

See ya,
Anna.

Excellent introductory rant! You touched on a lot of issues that make me want to become my icon. ::shudder:: I especially liked your point about Womanizer!Sirius. Where do these Planks get that idea from? There's absolutely no canon basis for that, and it really doesn't make him any more lovable of a character.

Oh, and thanks for the link! I'm highly amused. It's so true!

Thanks! I loved yours, Sarah's, and everyone else's; I hope it was up to standard. =)

Exactly my point about Womanizer!Sirius. The only thing that I can think of that may have led to the Planks turning him into a playboy is ONE SENTENCE in Order of the Phoenix. It was something like, "a girl sitting in a desk near him eyed him hopefully." That's it. No more canon references. How that turned into "all the girls of Hogwarts threw themselves at Sirius because he was ZOMGHAWT and he could go out with anyone he wanted" I will never know.

I think it's interesting how there are so many stereotypes for Marauder fanfics when there really isn't all that much we know about that timeframe in the books.

Up to standard. Are you going to write a full-length rant on one of them? Because you should.

And right after that sentence, it says Sirius wasn't paying attention to her! Not to mention JKR saying that he was too busy being a rebel to actually have a girlfriend. ::sigh:: These stupid Planks are "in love" with Sirius Black the character, and they're usually also the ones who love the bad-boy-turned-good-by-his-1-tru-luv. Ugh. Needle me, please.

That's an interesting point. We know three of the Marauders, but their characters have all progressed greatly since they were in school. Snape, well, he's Snape. But yeah, we don't know a lot, but I think that's what attracts people to the era. There's plenty of room for speculation and setting up your own rules system (god knows I have). So people who don't want to write canon can make up their own, nevermind how horrible it is.

Yeah, I was planning on writing about either Sirius or Peter more in depth sometime. And since wrenifer is doing one about Peter, I think I might talk about Sirius. Maybe I'll revisit Peter some other time.

Actually, maybe I'll write a rant on how similar many Lily/James stories really are. Half of them start out the same way, and they all sort of blur together after awhile unless one really stands out in my mind. I started reading your fic a couple days ago (I will review as soon as possible, promise) and it's refreshing to see an author actually start the story somewhere other than "Lily hates James, James lurves Lily."

I agree to all, but specialy the serious/sirius thing and sirius as a womanizer, or a plain idiot. I mean, he was abandoned by his family, and his at the top of the class. his not a frigin air head moron!

cheers ang*

p.s. someone rant bout fics that put lily and/or james and/or OC as an american/s - i understand u guys are patriotic and all - but Harry Potter is BRITISH!!! ACCEPT IT!!!

Thanks! Glad you liked it. And I agree with you about people making them American. I'm from the US, and when I see a fic like that, I just think, "No. They're British. Get it right, Plank." Have we ever, EVER seen an exchange program at Hogwarts? No. So don't invent one.
