I Doth Decree

There should be no such thing as 'Save Points' anymore.  I am an old man.  I have to shoehorn my gaming into my busy schedule these days.  If I get interrupted, I don't really want to go back and replay fifteen minutes worth of a game.  I want to be able to save and jump right back in where I left off.  I see people use the excuse, "If you can save ( Read more... )

Well, there isn't so much. Most games use auto-saving now. Most DS games have quick-saves. I dunno why you don't see things going your way.

I was playing an OHR game for the purposes of writing a review so I guess I should have clarified. You're right about most console games but quick-saves should just be saves. And I shouldn't have to walk out of a town so I can be on the world map to save. That's just dumb.

If I make another OHR game, I'll enable save anywhere, just for you.

There are reasons why you don't want permanent saves to be allowed anywhere, anytime -- but I agree that at the least, quicksaves should be made available to the player. You shouldn't have to play on the game's schedule.

But are they GOOD reasons? On a similar note: block-pushing puzzles are bullshit. Unless the name of the game is "Block Pusher" or something like that. Then I would know right off the bat that I wouldn't enjoy playing it. Because it is not fun to push blocks.

Yes. There was a huge argument on CP about this.

A prime example is the roguelike genre, an essential feature of which is permadeath. But at a more basic level, any savestate-abuser can tell you that free saving removes a game's challenge.

Really? It must have been before my time.

I still find Oblivion and Mass Effect and Dragon Age and ETC challenging. I won't get into a debate because I don't want to rehash old arguments. Do you agree with the block-pushing? This must be common ground.

Unless you save EXACTLY as something TERRIBLE happens and you are RUINED and you have to start from the BEGINNING.

Save points - or, more commonly now, checkpoints - say 'you have to do all of this, and you have to do all of this right, or you don't get to go on.' That's "artificial" challenge, yes, but video games are made by design, so they're entirely artificial. (Artificial means "made by humans".)
