James, nothing if not a convincing liar, had been grinning the entire way down to the kitchens from Gryffindor Tower, but the moment he swung open the portrait he looked totally neutral. Neutral and then, half a beat later, suitably surprised.
"Oh," said James, stopping short in the doorway. "Sorry, didn't realize the meeting was over."
As though Remus hadn't told him it was not five minutes before.
Lily gave a small, unsurprised smile as she saw who was at the portrait hole. She should have known. If she wasn't still so hungry, and if they hadn't had their conversation earlier, without arguing, she would have left. But as it was, she just stood aside slightly to let him enter.
"That's alright. Hungry?" she asked him, slightly sarcastically, but not unfriendly.
Congratulating himself on a ruse well played (though if he was honest with himself James knew Lily could see through it plain as day), James shrugged casually and stepped into the kitchen, letting the portrait swing shut behind him.
"Bit peckish, yeah. You'd better tell them what you want before they have conniptions," he said, nodding to the elves surrounding Lily as he turned to those clustering now around his knees.
"Treacle sponge, if you've got it," he told them before they could ask, with the indifference of one long used to having house elves at one's beck and call.
"I can get it myself, if they can show me where they keep things," Lily replied, raising her eyebrows a little at his request. She wasn't used to being waited on, and wasn't used to the way things were done when one had a house elf. Nor was she aware of any insult she might inflict on the elves, should she actually try to get the food herself.
"Miss must not get it herself!" the house elf at her feet said indignantly, "'Tis a house elf's job to serve the young miss! Does Miss not want us to do our job?"
"No, no, of course, I mean, no, I didn't mean -" she broke off, casting a glance at James. "A little help?"
