maria means owned by someone? hrmm that doesn't sound right! i do know it's the feminine form of marius,(the most notable being) a famous general in the republican times.

i also know it's spiritually related with catholicism, ie) mary star of the sea (and who did i learn this from? ZWAN! and a priest who commented on my zwan shirt.)
