Alistair tried so hard to smile. He began by twitching the corners of his mouth upwards, but that just made him look demented. He wanted to be normal, to make his conversation with Elley seem like a normal chat about nothing in particular and not that he was accusing her of anything.

"Hey, you," he said, knocking lightly on her bedroom door.

"Hey!" she said, happily and waving him in.

Elley got up to greet him. Everytime she couldn't see Alistair her thoughts would wander but it was never like that when they were actually together.

"Elley," he started, entering and sitting down. He patted the seat next to him as a way of asking her to join him.

Breathing deeply, he carried on talking.

"What's wrong? You seem so distant the whole time, I barely get to talk to you any more."
