i hate this guy, but he has a good point

The work is on your mind so much that when someone asks you to talk about it, it’s like, “Which part?” [...] I’m afraid the more I talk about it and try to make sense of it in my mind, the more I’ll jinx it. My friend Jeff Elrod once saw a painting in his head, and then he couldn’t make it. We used to share a studio, and he did these abstract ( Read more... )

I think about this sometimes. Maybe something similar but not the same: being so in love with the idea that you're scared to articulate/sing/play it or even attempt to because it may not live up to the standard of beauty in your head. Maybe it's the same thing, but understood or experienced differently.

I identify with your version of this concept much more than the one above. I'm definitely not bored by my own ideas (or whatever the guy is trying to get across), but sort of get so wrapped up in it I can never finish or usually even begin to start it

Also, this a huge favor/pain to ask, but I am working on my resume. Would it be a huge bother to ask if you'd give it a quick look? I trust your editing eye and am worried I'm being way too wordy/verbose/flowery (although maybe that's not so bad since both jobs I'm going for emphasize strong communication/writing skills??, ugh I hate this)

Absolutely.

I'm not the expert in resumes, but I can give you a good second opinion. I hate it too, especially in this economy. :(

I can relate to this as I'm perpetually in this state of affairs. All I can say is that on the rare occasions that I do go ahead and execute one of these ideas - give them a form - it's an elating experience. It's a great feeling giving form to something that was until now simply an idea...

..but that said, my ideas are never crystal clear - so I can only sense them, and even myself can't see them as something whole until I give it form.

I agree, the payoff for all of that frustration and self-doubt is divine once a project is completed to some degree of satisfaction

You are making a lot of sense and I definitely feel you. Most of my good ideas and the aesthetics/feelings/atmospheres that I want to capture are so hard to articulate, or shape into something intelligible, or even synthesize enough so that someone else can partially digest it. In a lot of ways it's like an image (that gut feeling), in that you can see it in your head perfectly (as amorphous as it is), but if you don't know how to draw, there's really no way to get it out exactly right and exactly as you want it ( ... )
