Well, my dad used to live just over the border on the Georgia side in Dalton...so I've been to Chattanooga a few times. The best thing I can tell you about it is that there is an awesome aquarium! And I think maybe a cool train museum. They have a minor league baseball team called the Lookouts, and we went to a couple of those games. I did know a couple of people in college who grew up in Chattanooga and went to a fancy prep school called McCallie--actually, someone I knew in college now teaches Latin there, I think.
It's definitely the south. For better or for worse--which means lots of things. I would bet that real estate is a heck of a lot cheaper than it is in Philadelphia or other urban centers in the NE or west. It's a smaller city in general though, so there's that. Atlanta was 75 miles or so from Dalton, so it's maybe 100 from Chattanooga. I think that would be your closest major city.
All I know is that I have driven through once, I think, and it sticks in my head (10 years later) as one of the most beautiful places I have seen. It was summer and so green, and the mountains are gorgeous.
Jason is from East Tennessee (Knoxville area) and my mom's family lives in Knoxville so I've been going there for the past 40 years.
It's very, very pretty. The Smoky Mountains are beautiful. It's probably a good mid-sized town - decent restaurants and shopping - plus is a day's drive to much of the country if you want to get out. I'd probably live there, if that means anything to you.
Chattanooga is a bit smaller and between K-ville and Nashville. It's also pretty close to Atlanta and Birmingham, Ala. It's very pretty but I don't know about life there. Amber lived there a year or so after she got married.
i like chattanooga a lot-we lived on lookout mtn which is a nice community to live in, smaller & a little isolated. some good local places for bbq/beer. not a ton of chi chi foodie places but there is a lot of outdoor stuff for kids, etc. in chatt you're not too far to go to atl for a day trip which is nice bc pretty much anything you want is in atl.
i still like knoxville a little better but it could be bc i've lived here longer. closer to the smoky mtns and tons of outdoorsy stuff to do. downside is i swear we are the chain restaurant capital of the world. we do have some local places that are yummy. its a pretty cheap place to live/raise a family and the public schools are very good in a lot of areas.
