what is the hardest thing you've ever done?

for me it was telling dark_knightly that i couldn't live with her. one moment, harder than 5 years of earning my black belt? totally. she asked me to "keep it off the internet" but i don't think she meant here; i think she meant twitter and facebook, where she still lives. here is a ghost town and since i still ( Read more... )

* Various romantic breakups.

* Getting rid of a houseful of stuff in autumn 2005 and the house to move to Poland.

* Learning Polish. (Well, I'm not sure it's accurate to say I've "done" this yet as opposed to "still doing" it...)

* Trying to decide whether & when to fly to the US when my father was dying and 99% unconscious and everyone there was advising me not to come.

* Helping various people close to me deal with various scary depression crises.

It's the sort of question that brings up more and more memories of examples. It's hard to rank them and say "This one, this particular one, was the hardest one."

Your question makes me ponder "What does 'hard' actually mean?" Reaching my level of knowledge/experience/expertise in various fields was "hard" in the sense of requiring lots of time and effort, but didn't seem hard if I was enjoying it. E.g. I enjoy Esperanto more than Polish, so Polish feels harder (besides the objective reasons why it is harder: lots of irregular nouns and verbs, verb aspect, noun genders, unfamiliar ( ... )

There certainly are different variations of "hard". Some things are challenging because of the time, knowledge, skill, etc. required. Some are difficult for emotional or mental reasons. For me, the latter are the "harder" things. Even if something takes great time, skill, etc., if I'm mentally and emotionally committed to it, it gets done. What's hard for me is getting the emotional, the mental commitment ( ... )

Yeah, there's "hard" in a "scary" sense (OMG, what if I regret cutting off 2 feet of hair?)

FWIW I cut my long hair short some years ago and now I must say the incredibly convenient practical benefits make me have no regrets. :)

You're still a stronger man than I am. My girlfriend of just 10 weeks dumps me and her reasons poke me in a sensitive spot so I'm a waterworks and running off to be with my family for a week to get my head straight.

I've been thinking about you a lot since I saw you Saturday. I've seen you down before, and I've see you thoughtful, but I don't think I've ever seen you quite like that. I don't know if the two instances are related but now I'm kind of guessing they might be ( ... )

Hardest thing I've ever done...well, certainly way up there is a breakup I had in 2003. Still qualifies as the worst break-up ever, at least in my life. Jesus. Matter of fact, dealing with the aftermath of that relationship is what made me get an LJ.

That's seriously the only thing I can think of. Huh.

I think interpersonal struggles are so much harder than anything else we face, because it's no longer just struggling with ourselves and our capacity for retention or development of expertise, but dealing with the infinite complexity that is humanity.

I am also here for you in whatever capacity you might need. A hug, a beer, dancing, quiet closeness, etc. Just let me know. <3
