The Current State Of Grit

Hi guys,

This is loooong overdue, but I can’t put it off any longer.

Yes, Grit has been on hiatus.

Long story short: I’ve been struggling with myself over Grit, and after much weighing-up and soul searching, I (personally - not Danny) can’t keep doing this the way I have been. Before panic sets in, this doesn’t mean I’m dropping Grit ( Read more... )

Thanks for the heads up, glad you both are doing well and I look forward to Platinum Grit's online return and hope to do what I can to tell others about your amazing comic!

It was amazing all the work you put into Grit, and doing episode chunks is a HUGE pressure to be sure - I've just breathed a big sigh of relief knowing that this wasn't a "so long and thanks for all the fish" type post!

I thoroughly enjoyed the 'episode at a time' method, as it was like waiting for christmas and getting all my new toys at once. Uberindulgence for the win!

Having said that, I am thrilled that you're going to a regular schedule. I sincerely hope this draws a bunch more people in for you. And I'll be getting regular, but more sanely portioned doses of one of my all time favorite webcomics!

As someone firmly in the any grit is good grit camp, I'm happy to follow along in whatever format it ends up in. Chapter-at-a-time, Page-at-a-time, whatever works. Just happy to hear it's not over yet ^^

Because what you've been doing has been amazing and wonderful. Take your time withe the revamp - do it right and do it in a way that satisfies you and makes things easier.

We can wait. PG is always worth the wait.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed that it was taking longer than usual this time.

I'm not convinced that publishing a page at a time is the best way to do it for a long format story (as opposed to a strip or daily gag comic) but that's your choice to make. (it's not intended to be read that way, and it makes understanding some things difficult for the reader because he doesn't remember the page he read a month ago, but on the other side, the readers notice more of the little details on each page, and provide a great free copyediting service)

Looking forward to the new site, and new episode. Grit is, and always was worth the wait.

No, it's not the ideal for longform, but it is the standard readers are used to - even with other longform comics such as The Meek. There's been a lot of (perfectly legitimate) negative feedback over the years about the flash format, so while some pluses are lost, it will also make other things easier (such as being able to bookmark and keep reading later without having to load and scroll through 150 to 200+ panels).

I've weighed up the pros and cons for a long time now, so it isn't a sudden decision. And while I totally get what you're saying and agree, doing it this way is the only way I can actually keep doing Grit at all.

You're right, almost every other longform webcomics is being published one page at a time.

The only counter-example I can think of is Octopus Pie. The author, Meredith Gran, started with the one-page model, and then made a switch to installment publishing.
