Why didn't anyone tell me how much work this was?

What a week! There still hasn't been any word of the creative writing teacher (sue me, I've been here almost a month and don't know all of the other teachers' names). It's sounding like one of those typical Sunnydale things. And believe me, now that I'm staying late for auditions, I've made sure I have pepper spray with me, plus a couple of basic ( Read more... )

I was totally surprised to hear from Heather. She said she saw me at the bookstore last week and decided to look up my number. Wow, I can't believe she's actually teaching at SHS.

I push my way through the door at Willy's and look around to see if she's there yet.

I raise a hand and wave at Amy when I see her come in. She really hasn't changed much since high school, although she looks a lot more self-assured.

"So good to see you again!" I exclaim when she comes over to the table. "I've been meaning to look people up ever since I got back, but the job is seriously running me ragged. I haven't ordered yet, just got her a couple of minutes ago."

"Good, I didn't keep you waiting, then," I say, sitting down. "My boyfriend dropped by right as I was leaving, and you know guys." I wink at her. "He had to get smoochy." I pick up a menu.

"So do you like working at the school so far? I never wanna see the place again, myself." I smirk. So I have some bad memories. Sue me.

"One of the best ways to get delayed," I say, winking back.

"Teaching's...a challenge. Really different then I thought it'd be. Plus, not that many memories there in the new building, and boy, did I get lost the first couple of weeks." I shake my head. "I took on the school play," I tell her, "And the schedule is kind of kicking my ass."

I order a rum and coke when the waitress stops beside me.

"Yeah, it was a puppet," I tell her. I finish my margarita and trace the salt on the rim of my glass with one finger. "Oh, yeah, I definitely practice." I pause to glance at her. "What kind of protection spell are you thinking of, specifically?"

I drain the rum and coke and signal the waitress for another. "Hmm, I'll have to give that some thought. So many...many things that could potentially go wrong." And yes, now all the strange occurances from high school are swirling through my brain and about to give me a major anxiety attack. Directing the play was one thing, but I'd totally forgetten to take the Sunnydale factor into account. "I'll get back to you on that, but I'd be grateful if you're willing to lend a hand. I might be a little rusty."

I look at her. "You know, you look great! Enought about me, what have you been up to the last few years? I always meant to keep in better touch, but between classes and summer internships...well, you know how it goes."

I really need another drink.

"Funny you should ask," I say. "There was an incident while I was still in school, that involved nearly being burned at the stake?"

I smile at her expression.

"Let's just say that it ended with me becoming a rodent. I lived in a habitrail for more than three years."

"Oh!" I say, startled. "That couldn't have been fun. The almost burning or the time as a rodent. No one knew the counterspell, huh? Wasn't that covered in witchcraft 101?" I tease. She doesn't look pleased.

"Seriously, that had to have sucked. No one around here knew what to do? Guess I should have come to visit, I'd have had you human again in no time." I sip at the second drink, feeling a warm relaxation flow through my limbs for the first time all week.

"Not a bit," I tell her. "The Magic Box has anything you'd need for spells. I shop there a lot."

I pause, smiling at her. "I'm really glad you looked me up when you got back to town. This has been a lot of fun."

The Magic Box--I make a mental note to look it up next time I have a spare hour. According to my calculations that'll be sometime in June, but I'm sure I can squeeze it in...somehow.

"I am too! It's seriously good to know there's a few of the old group still around, and a little time away from teenagers? Is a very good thing," I say with a grin. "You picked a great bar, too, the service is excellent."

I stand up and look around, for the first time noticing a fairly strange-looking group near the back...what is that on that guy's face, gills? "Guess I've had enough to drink for one night," I murmur.

I try to subtly herd her toward the front door after we pay our checks; there are some truly scary individuals in here right now. "Yeah, this place has improved a lot in the past several months. They completely remodeled it, I hear."

I button my jacket as we step outside. "Well, we should definitely make this a regular thing, girls night." I look around and spot my car a short way down the block.

"Great seeing you again, Amy."
