I read the first book and thought it was okay but didn't love the second book so wasn't planning on continuing. I'd be curious to get an honest Adult (non emotional teen) opinion on it once you are done.
Okay, I've finished the book now. I think what Roth did was awesomely brave from a literary point of view. Not just any author would have the guts to do what she did with this book.
The funny thing is, this is not one of my favorite series. It's been enjoyable enough, but not one I would give top marks. There are worldbuilding issues that I think are problematic enough to cause plot flaws for the overall ending. Despite all that, and despite having been spoilered by the time I got the book, I still cried! The character development was good enough that it still got to me.
Then again, I think I am too soft for YA in which kids or teens have to face certain things.
Hmm interesting. So it worked for you? My first reaction was that she did it to be literary. As exemplified by my post above, I was more amused when I first read the spoiler than anything. But then today I read VR's "explanation" for her ending that she posted on her blog. And it disturbed me more than anything. But without the context of reading the book and knowing more about the real word in the book and what the experiment was and what Trish sacrificed herself for, I can't really judge it correctly.
Btw did you read the Dream Thieves? I didn't like it :(
