My Grandma celebrated her 100th birthday this past Friday. This is not unprecedented as her mother lived to be 100. And in doing research about my ancestors I've determined that the majority of them lived into their 90s which rather surprised me as many of them lived through very hard times and I would have expected them to live shorter lives. Ha! Your family is a hoot. Your grandma sounds like she has an excellent plan, all around.

Take it one morning at a time and get younger every decade, these are the things I learn from my family's history!

Indeed! Sounds like an excellent plan to me. Hopefully she'll be able to stick to it for many years to come. :D

Well she is ready to go to the great party in the sky as soon as she is able. She knows she will see her parents and siblings and all other long lost friends and loved ones once she passes on so she is really looking forward to it. So while part of me would like her to stick around here with us, the other part of me hopes she gets her wish before much longer.

Happy birthday to your grandmother. I do like her plan of seeing if she wakes up every morning until she doesn't. It sounds quite splendid, actually. And good for her for 'wintering' somewhere she can be around people. Our neighbor turns 100 in January and her goal was to live in her house, the same house she has lived in since she married around 70 or so years ago, until she turns 100. After that she will deign to allow her children to set her up in assisted living, but not a moment before. She has a lot of spunk.

Happy New Year!

I think the best thing is when elderly people can make these decisions for themselves and not to force them into something just because it would make it easier for everyone else. Being able to cut back and exit on your own terms is key. Here is to hoping your neighbor is able to continue as she wants.

Happy Birthday to your Grandmother.

In the US is there any special commemoration for 100th Birthdays? In the UK people who turn 100 get sent a birthday card from The Queen (used to be a telegram but they changed that for obvious reasons), but I don't know if other countries have a similar tradition.

I think you can get a letter from the President but my Grandma dislikes of our current President so we didn't try for that. The Pope supposedly will do something but you have to go through your local parish and while we approached her priest about it months ago he failed to follow through. Too bad as that would have really meant something to her.
