So I finally got around to signing up for Linkedin last night. I really didn't want to and I've been putting it off for ages but I finally gave in because it seems like the only way I can get in contact with a bunch of people I knew in the past from my construction days and some of my former architecture classmates. Yikes! How the heck did that happened? I got to admit, the Internet sometimes scare me... I set up my FB to as private as I could but I still would get friends requests!

I do not have a LinkedIn account and thus no idea how the setting works.

Yeah I have no idea how that happened. It is just super super creepy. It...whatever it is...knows everything about us.

It just offers people on the basis of their links to people you know, places you've worked.

So if you know A and A knows B, it offers B. It's not that scary at sll. And it's not like Facebook. No one has to be friends with anyone. You can just opt not to fill in details, or I think you can keep your profile visible to contacts

No I get that. And so I understand when it recommends friends of friends to me. But that still doesn't explain how the ex-friend showed up as a suggestion as I knew her in isolation...we have no schools, friends, connections, or work experience in common at all. She even has a different name from when I was last in contact with her. So us being linked despite there being nothing to link us, I do find that creepy.

Presumably there is someone in common between you and perhaps they loaded their contacts list into linkedin.

I've had that happen to me.

Yeah, I would guess that even if you were scrupulous about keeping your contacts off LinkedIn, LN, your former friend may not have been.
