What is the best piece of wisdom/advice about marriage that you have ever heard?

I got so much advice :) I think the best one is that marriages aren't 50/50, it's 60/40. "Give 60 and take 40. And that goes for you both."

Another good bit of advice, which I've realized for myself, is never think of divorce as a way out. If you start thinking there's an escape, you'll be focusing on getting out instead of making it work.

An old guy in the grocery store and I got to talking in line shortly after I'd gotten married. He had been married for a long time (I can't remember how long but he was old and had gotten married really young) and he told me to make sure that you like your spouse. The emotional part of love will come and go and that "like" will get you through the inbetween times. You have to be able to like spending time with them, like being with them and like seeing them smile.

Oh yeah and someone else told me "never poision your husband. he won't die, he'll just get sick and you'll be stuck taking care of him." i think she was joking but who knows!
