Contraception

My husband and I want to have kids in the future, but for now feel like concentrating on each other is the way to go. I have some gyno issues and can no longer take pills, but I have to be on some sort of hormone because of my endometriosis. I basically have to choose between the Implanon (implant in your arm) or a Mirena (IUD).

I figure since this ( Read more... )

I have Paragard- the non-hormonal IUD and it has been such a rough road for me. I am actually considering getting it removed because my menstrual cramps are out of control. It gets to the point that it hurts so bad I cry. I also have a tipped uterus so I have major back pain, which obviously has nothing to do with the IUD. The insertion was very very painful for me (it's worse for those that have not had kids because your cervix is not able to relax itself (they had my cervix CLAMPED for like 30 minutes), which I guess changes if you've had children). They say that the bad cramps/heavy periods last about 6 months. I dont have any experience with Mirena, though. Other than the cramps and heavy periods (which you obviously wouldn't have with Mirena), I love the IUD and it is so nice to not have to worry about popping a pill, having enough condoms, or getting the shot the right time of the year. It is very convenient and it is one less thing to worry about.... unless you have the reminder once a month like I do :P ( ... )

I was on Implanon for 4 years and the only reason I took it out was because we are now ttc. I loved Implanon, it was trouble free and most of the time I even forgot I had it there. I was able to travel and go places and not worry about carting drugs with me or remembering to take my pill. I got very light periods about every 60ish days that only lasted a week or so. Oh and my whole hormonal mood swings leveled out, so much so that my husband commented on it within the first few months I was on it (About how I wasn't moody anymore when it was "that time") and also when I came off it (because obviously I'm now moody again around "that time")

Personally the only dray back I can think to Implanon is that I have 2 little (very small) scars under my left arm near my armpit. But it certainly brought a lot of freedom and easy to my life so I feel, for me it was worth it.

I don't have personal experience with IUDs, but I know several people with the Mirena and they're very pleased with it.

I can't stop thinking of IUD horror stories from way back in the day, which has always kept me from getting one. It's silly. Your post has actually made me want to look into it more. My anxiety medication makes me a bit forgetful and I'm finding that I'm slacking in taking my birth-control pills lately. :( Not good!

Is your health insurance covering the cost of the IUD?
