Why doesn't anyone understand biracial hair?! To Caucasian or Asian people, you have kinky hair. To African-Americans, you have "good hair". But at the end of the day, no one knows what the hell to do with it.

Does anyone else get sick of people telling you to straighten your hair?

I prefer my hair straightened. It's easier to maintain and looks better with my facial features and the kind of hairstyles that I like.

haha.. i completely understand!
i usually straighten mine b.c i like it better and i know people will get off my back about my hair.
but my current beau prefers my frizz and curls.. so it'll probably be curly and wavy and kinky more often

I had my hair straightened for about a year, and suffered the opposite problem (people always telling me to stop and shave it off, which I eventually did). I guess as a guy though, it's not as acceptable a practice.
I don't know though if I dislike being nappy because of a truly person feeling, or if it's just an internalized stereotype that white (or asian, I guess) hair is "best." But it's true and sucks that most people don't know what to make of biracial hair.

I've noticed that Dominican salons or stylists are the best when it comes to this.

I actually have the opposite problem. I get tired of other people telling me to stop straightening my hair, because they usually do once they find out that my "crowning glory" is actually naturally curly hair that I straighten (without chemicals though... just blowdrying and/or flat-ironing). I get sick of hearing about how so many people would kill to have naturally curly hair like mine, how bad overstyling is for my hair, and how I ought to learn to love my hair the way God made it.

Maybe people just always feel the need to have an opinion and give other people beauty advice... who knows. You should wear your hair however you like it best. If you prefer your hair curly, I say rock it that way.

I definitely leave my hair natural. I used to flat iron it and found that it dried it out to a sad, decrepit mess. I straightened it until my friend took me to a hair show where my almost waist long hair was chopped to my shoulders. I was shocked to all hell, but realized how much healthier my hair felt and how much easier it was not to have to retouch my hair with that straight iron, or to avoid rain or swimming or humidity just so my hair will stay right. I personally hate that, but if that's what you want to do and if that's how YOU like your hair, go right on ahead.

Also, I used to consider relaxing it, but now I find that disgusting.

Now that my hair is natural, I might occasionally straighten it with a flat iron for special occasions for something different, but that is few and very far between. Sometimes I'll even make imitation dread locs but usually just leave it alone. Even then, I tend to dislike my hair. I can find more things to do with my hair the way it is. I have something all other races don't and I like to play ( ... )
