Yes, you can do this. Get your parents to hassle financial aid. I believe I got something like 6k in aid at UCSB and I asked Oxy to give me a comprable percentage and they did. My mom had to write a nice letter or two but somehow I got a comprable ammount of aid.
Also, if nothing else, just beg for work-study at least and you should get it which is a solid 2k a year where you can get paid to study if you get the right job.
I wrote Oxy a letter when I got admitted, asking them to give me more aid. I went from $7000 a year to $8000 a year which isn't much but I guess it was worth something. In mine I compared other colleges I was admitted to and packages they offered. I'm not sure what people recommend in that sense, but I did it and it worked a little!
I wrote a letter when I was admitted because I literally couldn't attend Oxy without a better aid package, and, thank god, they gave it to me. It's worth a shot.
consider this their first offer, and ask for more. treat it kind of like haggling and see how much they can get for you. They offered you a merit scholarship because they really want you to come to Oxy, and so they will likely be willing go a little further if they can get you to come.
Bigger name, that's for sure. It depends on your field though. Don't come to Oxy for engineering, science, math, or technology, Berkeley would be much better in those areas. If liberal arts is your area then it's a good idea.
Liberal arts is definitely my area (ECLS), but I really don't like how there are no linguistics or creative writing courses at Oxy, either... It's a liberal arts college, for chrissakes, linguistics/creative writing are the ONLY things it should offer!

I know what you mean -- every $1000 really adds up.
