my america.

a while back I read on her journal an entry about how she was proud to be british. and about her england. and I enjoyed it, and sort of tucked it away because I wasn't quite sure to say to that as I am neither english, nor am I from england. it made me want to turn an eye on my own country, on my nationality and how I feel. and now I' ( Read more... )

I love being an American more than anything in the world. I'm not proud to be an American -- I've always associated pride of culture or ethnicity as a bit nationalistic, but I love this country more than anywhere else on the planet.

What really sucks, though, is how I have no identity. Whenever I travel abroad, people hate me for being American and hate me for being Iranian. ajdhasjd :))

I love being an American more than anything in the world.really, that's what I meant. and "proud" wasn't really the right word . . . because it's associated with some things that I don't mean in that sense. it somehow conjures up notions of superiority, and that's not what I meant. but you hit it on the head. I love this place. and I will travel and go far and fall in love with other countries and cities and people, but that can't ever replace the love I have for the place I was born and raised ( ... )

<3 I appreciate your thoughts, and appreciate your not hating me because I took a leaf out of your book.

I think . . . perhaps embarrassed was not the ideal word for what I meant, but I wrote this and my mind was sort of wandering, so I could've been much more eloquent (had I tried harder). but there does seem to be this widely accepted sentiment among many americans and nonamericans alike that "<3ing your country if you're american = omgnotcool." that if you appreciate being from here and feel lucky to have been raised here . . . or simply happy to be a citizen, you're wrong because once again, america is omgsobad. and we fuck up. we do. like everyone else does. and it's unfortunate that when someone fucks up, someone else is affected. and the current administration disgusts me, many of america's policies disgust me, much of america's past disgusts me. but I love the country no less, you know? because it's my home . . . and . . . well, I can't claim to be from any other place. and I never think I would.

thanks for hearing me, lady
