The Book List!

Aug 03, 2004 00:12

So in a past entry I asked people to recommend some good books for me to read (on top of my already extensive proposed reading list; this is going to take me the rest of my life, haha). I'm going to list them all here for my own reference but hey, some people might want to flip through it too for something new to read ( Read more... )

AH! EAST OF EDEN, right? Is that him? I just saw that on the bookshelf in my apartment and forgot it in the 'long' walk back to my computer to add it. Thanks for reminding me! lol.

grapes of wrath I've read. hated the first 25 pages and loved it from then on in. once you get past the lengthy descriptions and the 'maw an paw' it gets really, really good, huh? :)

Read "The Gunslinger" series by Stephen King. There's like 6 books out now, with another on the way. *Very* good.

Terry Pratchett - _Wee Free Men_ & _Hat Full Of Sky_. They follow after one another in a series, so I recommend Wee Fee Men first. They're lighter than normal Pratchett in terms of length -- they're supposedly children's books, but I think that's aobut the same as saying Harry Potter is children's reading. He still manages to sneak some very important lessons in amongst the jokes. I recommend it partially because the heroine is a nice example of an empowered female. well, not totally empowered, but still, she rescues the prince. Much better than some of Pratchett's other children's books (Truckers, Diggers, etc I really never got along with.)

Also, I recommend _like water for chocolate_, Dorothy Allison's _bastard out of carolina_ [very heavy stuff in there at places, but she writes with strength], _The Passion Of Alice_ by Stephanie Grant (I'm not a big fan of books that explore "BIG ISSUES," but this one, although the central character is an anorexic, is less about anorexia and more about people that meet in unlikely places. There's biting observation that reminded me a little of Plath when she wasn't maudlin, and the main character develops a delightful crush on a fellow patient).

Also, maybe _Equal Rites_ by Pratchett might tickle your fancy.

Haha, Terry Pratchett is hilarious. Reminds me... I forgot to add Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's Good Omens. I've only skimmed it when I borrowed it from a friend and I never finished it.

The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett and Stardust [I think that's what it's called] by Neil Gaiman, and Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett :D
