This photo has Stunning colors, perfect composition, good use of depth of field, overall a very beautiful and emotive photograph.

To answer your question, yes, photographs of murderers, sad animals, can all be wonderful shots, yet the subjects in them are not all that appealing. Also, most people wold not take self portraits if that was the case.
