Because "meeting people" online has started to freak me out. My future Tufts classmates have been contacting me, but I don't want to pretend I have friends there that I actually know as people before I go there. It's weird. In general, the reason for this thinking is that I would much rather know people in person. As a means to keep in touch with people that I already know and care about, Facebook is generally useful--but when people use it or other social networking or electronic communications means to "meet" people online and actually take it seriously, it only causes problems, the least and most common of which is serious frustration. It's useful, yes--but it's problematic.
I TOTALLY AGREE. i wrote a very similar entry on this a few weeks ago. i really hate people adding me from haverford and talking to me, b/c i want to meet ppl face to face. but at the same time, i feel very frustrated b/c i feel that i might "fall behind" on making friends b/c everyone else is talking to eachother through facebook.
