I'd hate to shine a black light in her bathroom.

So when I found out that someone repeatedly impregnated herself and induced miscarriages using herbal abortificants in the name of art I was like, "Oh that's weird and dumb and everyone other than Bob Flanagan harming their body for art has never really moved me."

Finding out it was all a social experiment has made it freakin' HILARIOUS and ( Read more... )

I LIKE PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS, SCULPTURES, GRAFFITI, AND EVEN/ESPECIALLY TAXIDERMY ART.

I do not like performance art because it is too hard for my brain honestly. :(

yeah, that really freaked me out, because it seriously triggered a shit ton of mental-illness stuff in my head, because I totally get why she was doing it, but damn, I think if it were real, it would be really psychologically fucked up of her. I've been at the point several times in my life when I would do something like that and damned if I wasn't severely depressed/full of self-hatred.

also, a lot of the feminists that are the most outspoken about this are women of color. I think there is a fundamental disconnect going on here that people don't seem to be getting.

I definitely agree that it would have had psychological effects. Even totally disconnecting emotion from the act of abortion, she would be in the public eye for a LONG time hearing extremely vicious criticism. It was difficult for me to emotionally invest in it when I thought it was real because even as a college student at that age I have a gut "ughhh" reaction to performance art. If the charade had gone on longer I'd probably have something more introspective to say.

a lot of the feminists that are the most outspoken about this are women of color.

That is a good point. I only read the comments from my friends and two communities that don't really count on an analytical level.

IA!

While it was going on I was saying all this shit and now looking back on it now that I know it's not real I'm just like "Shit, that was a stupid thing to say/think".

THE ART. IT WORKS.

I get theatre and poetry and music and fiction (okay maybe not house of leaves but still) and visual art but idk...performance art is harder for me to grasp. I have to approach it from a "theatre of the oppressed" viewpoint. street theatre is pretty much performance art, so I just had to filter this through that theatrical lens. I'm much calmer than I was before, but I still understand why people are upset.
