Aging Kitties

So both my cats are now a little over 15 years old, and it's hard for me not to be aware (possibly hyper-aware) of their mortality. Saturday, I brought Audrey in to the vet because she seemed to be losing weight/getting more boney, and I was concerned she might have a hyperthyroid condition, since her last tests indicated she might be heading that ( Read more... )

*HUGS* I know how hard it is, and how worrisome. Did they check Audrey for diabetes and kidney? When my Athena started losing weight it was all sugar issues, and at that time she went on insulin, which is hard, but worth it. I hope you have many many many more years with both of them.

Thanks! I know they checked something regarding her kidneys, because they noted her kidney function was just barely outside of normal, but they didn't seem to think that was not unusual for a cat her age, and it wasn't something to worry about yet. I'll ask about the diabetes, but I think that was checked for as well.

And yes, they did check her for diabetes. She's fine there so far. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Should the time ever come when you need to take a pet to the vet knowing that you'll be coming home without them... take a friend along. Even if you don't want anyone in the room with you as it happens, just having someone else drive so you can hold your baby on the way there is helpful.

Also, if you're worried about it, ask your vet NOW what their procedure is. If you don't like the procedure, you've got time to find another option should it become necessary. It's a lot harder to deal with it if you've already made the decision to put a pet out of its misery and then have to backpedal in the vet's office at the last second.

Yeah, I probably should ask. I just don't like to think about it. And thanks for the advice on bringing a friend - that hadn't occurred to me.

We're going through that right now. We lost Ogre's kitty in January. The_Grrsl is 17, Mutt's 14. The Man just had some teeth out, he's 12. Thank heavens for the Babycat, who is three.

I know exactly how you're feeling.
