I guess I didn't mention that I was going. But, yeah. Rented a car, drove 500 miles to Baxter State Park, home of Katahdin, the tallest mountain in Maine.

I'm sure you could work your way up to something like this. There was even a guy up there who said he was afraid of heights. Of course, I think his group decided they were never going to do that hike ever again, but hey.
The good thing about hiking compared to other sporty things is that you can go as slowly as you want and stop to rest as often as you want. As long as you get back before dark, of course. And even then it's up for debate
I think you have a few different state/national parks up your way. And there's a section of the Appalachian Trail that runs up the very western edge of Massachusetts. Go for it!
