hmm... i can see how it'd be scary... I mean... it's just such a freaky thing, such an anomaly. The color, the size, the proportions, etc... And it seems (seemed to me- maybe I'm reading way too much into it, though) that it's somehow deceitful- like it's betraying you by hiding so much underwater. AND it's kind of bipolar-looking. The bottom is all cold and icy and dark and stuff, but the top is light, breezy almost.. OH and the streams of light coming out of it... that makes it seem creepier, too, I think... But yeah... basic point: yeah, I see what you're saying...
the luminousity of the picture is eerie... but, I think the disturbing aspect is how the danger lurks beneath the surface. It is unknowable and deceptive, and since you are someone who thrives on thrills, this picture confronts you with a real sense of menace.
on a side note, I was swimming at a hotsprings when I was a kid and I ducked under water and clocked my head on a rock. But I was nowhere near the rocks. It was just like the iceberg - you can't see what's under the surface.
