1. I have thought for a long time that I don't want children. There are a mix of reasons. One is that I really, really don't want to put with the infant/toddler phase. Another is fears that I wouldn't make a very good parent. Another is that I'm worried that I'd end up with a child I didn't like, for one reason or another (there are some personality/temperament types I just don't get along with, and having a child I spent all my time fighting with would make me unhappy).
2. If I were to have children, I honestly don't think I'd care that much. A genetic connection is nice, as other commenters have reminded me, because genes do affect all sorts of real and important things. On the other hand, all the most important things I care about in people, and that I would want any child of mine to have, are learned things: a conscience, an interest in truth and learning, etc. So I guess genes aren't that important to me.
