The following is a discussion between Nick Warren and myself. Its difficult to summarize, so I won't. We'd both very much like your input. Enjoy, I hope it gets you thinking.
I personally can't get all the way through this arguement because key things are left out. And most of this seems very tedious and somewhat unsupported.
First; Survival is a prevelant ideal in all living matter. Hope has nothing to do with it in the end, it comes to the creatures will and ability to survive.
Second; I don't understand how selflessness can be tied to repopulation. It in itself is a selfish act because pleasure was tied to it to entise animals to reproduce. Mind you there are organisms that reproduce and my never seen the opposite sex, but that feature was built in (whether you want to say evolution or created).
Third; Hope seems to be getting over simplified as something non-intellectual.
Sorry, I couldn't get through the (to me) off the wall assumptions included within the arguement.
Second; That is addressed in the original post at length
Third; I believe that is also addressed in the original post at length.
I posted this here for constructive criticism Cory. Your arrogant assumptions are detrimental to that aim. Please re-read the original post, any following comments and think about your response before you post anything further.
If your criticisms still stand after you take above steps, please clarify them a bit, make them a bit less accusatory and repost them. I will then address them as needed.
If you leave it with no assumptions going into the arguement then it can go on endlessly with no clear or definate reason in it.
I apologize if it seems that I was attacking your debate, I was merely trying to point stuff out that I my have missed that seemed key in the arguement.
