it's a tough situation and i dont think there's any 100% right answer.
if you decide to stay with him, make it crystal clear that the moment he's starting to drag you down, you'll walk. and then don't be afraid to back it up. if he's really worth it, then he's worthy of tough love. and as much as it sucks horribly to do it, i really believe that sometimes people need to hit rock bottom before they can push off, and if you keep stopping them and keep stopping them, you're only going to prolong their falling down.

yeah it wont be easy but i agree with that..your other friend said. sometimes things for people have to get worse before they can get better. but if you can stop...so can he. and at least you can be there to try and help him. you can figure out what to do.
