My thoughts exactly. I was like oh, Chekov's being shadowing Scotty for maybe a year and now he's an engineering expert.

lol I think they were looking for an excuse for Chekov not to meet Khan, as that is what happened in the original episode. This was just the best they could come up with, I guess.
