Miyano Mamoru is a little too good to be real. At least, in Shunri’s mind, his partner-in-crime is an admittedly glorified figure; his Mamo, the Smily to his Spiky, is a man with a sense of humor unlike any other. Mamo is always laughing, always joking, always seeing nothing but the best in his fellow human beings. Something about him only sees your ultimate potential, and when you meet his eyes, you want with a fierce desperation to live up to his expectations of you.

Mamo, quite simply, requests your best. And you give it to him.

Shunri never tires of his friend’s presence, because Mamo makes him feel just a little bit safer, a little bit more comfortable with his life. Together, they are Smily*Spiky, invincible duo, superheroes in their own right. Mamo embodies security for Shunri, and he can never quite place when it happened.

When they had first met, Ueshima-sensei had explained that doubles pairs needed to have a chemistry. If there wasn’t that connection between the actors, the audience would sense the discord and react poorly. To be honest, Shunri was immediately intimidated. He didn’t know this ‘Miyano’ fellow at all, and he thought it was asking an awful lot to force him to become best friends with a perfect stranger.

And then Mamo, in his typical fashion, imitated Ueshima with disturbing accuracy, declaring to all present that should they fail in their quest for personality harmony, important people would send ninjas to kill them.

Shunri thinks that was probably the hardest he’d laughed in his entire life.

Over the years, there were myus, the birth of Smily*Spiky, and a friendship unlike any other Shunri had ever had. He’d never felt so completely in awe of someone before, and yet, Mamo was also the most down-to-earth person he could think of. Mamo grounded Shunri, and in exchange, Shunri gave Mamo the freedom to be his own child-like self, without fear. Shunri balanced Mamo, and Mamo lifted Shunri.

At some point, though, Shunri started seeing Mamo in a new light. The way he smiled crookedly, with one side of his face grinning wider than the other, delighted him. Mamo’s bangs falling in his face made Shunri itch to reach out and brush them aside. Once he slipped and did reach out to fix them, and Mamo gave him a look of such confusion that Shunri immediately swore to himself that he’d never do it again.

But it was hard, so hard, to see Mamo asleep in Shunri’s bed after a night of drinking, and not curl up beside him, taking comfort in the physical warmth of someone he trusted with all his heart. Instead, he took a photo in the highest quality he could manage, in order to preserve the ache in his chest at the sight.

Mamo wakes up disoriented, but Shunri is there by his side, laughing softly at him and reminding him that while he is the Cup Emperor, the cups are best emptied by somebody with a higher tolerance for alcohol.

And even though he wants nothing more than to be the one Mamo curls around, instead of a blanket, he will sleep on his sofa with a sheet. He will take photos rather than touch; he will pretend that Mamo is merely the dearest friend he’s ever had.

And he will be okay.

Somehow.
