revenge of the fallen: using the muted group theory to analyze the movie transformers 2

Edwin Ardener, Cheris Kramerae and their colleagues developed the muted group theory as a communication and feminist approach, because it deals with the exclusion of women in the mainstream and public avenues of expression. Kramerae posits that, since men are the dominant group in society, then their views and perceptions are also dominant (in ( Read more... )

Equality among men and women kaipastor05 July 1 2009, 18:04:36 UTC
I have watched the theory of Egypt on discovery channel about how the pyramids were built that sort of stuff. I was sort of expecting that there's this theory about aliens or something during the ancient times in relation to the movie hehe. Honestly, based on the movie, I focused on how they would be able to revive Optimus Prime or restore him to life rather than paying attention to the actual fact that the movie is indeed male dominated. Most of the comments I've read on the internet says that the movie sucks but thanks to Megan Fox they were able to enjoy it for the plain reason that she's hot. I hate the fact that women have always been treated as "sex toys" or just something that would satisfy men's fantasies. If we would come to think of it, Megan has played an important role in the movie by flying all the way to the male lead's dorm and trying to save his life. She was willing to do everything to help even if it would endanger her own life. In relation to our society today, contributions of women which may either be huge or ( ... )

Despite all the rave, I think this issue should be addressed. Exactly. Women are portrayed wrongly by media. In the middle of the movie I started to wonder what exactly Megan's role is. Yes there were parts where she played an important role in saving the earth but she was more like a decoration in the film. I don't understand why she had to wear skimpy clothes all the time and why the robot had to hump her leg (this part made me laugh but when you come to think about it, it's downright gross.) The movie was great but in reality, women are more than that.

It is funny to think that while watching the film I was not able to realize or observe how women are being portrayed. I was so caught up by the effects used and the funny lines said by the characters. but, when i've read this i realized that the person who wrote the blog was so so right!

indeed the film was dominated by men and it seems that women has no use at all. it sad that women are depicted as an object of attraction well in fact if we really think about it their role is really a big help especially the role of megan fox.

i think the point here is that everyone should always remember that men and women are all equal.. we are both created by God which means no one is above the other =)

so I think all of us should now be critical on how us women are being used in the field of media.

I MUST AGREE camilleponce July 2 2009, 21:47:06 UTC
I think the points that were stated in this movie review was clearly explained I must agree with the inequality between the value of men and women. At first, honestly, I really was amazed with the way the movie was directed. But when I saw this review, it gave me a lot of realizations. Maybe this is an eye-opener to all of us. I may give myself as an example when I noticed the role and character of Megan Fox in the movie. I admired her being an eye-catcher in the movie. I was even jealous because my boyfriend became a fan of her and even published a quiz in Facebook whether Megan Fox would date her or not. He watched it earlier than I did so when I watched the movie, it made me agree that Megan Fox is really noticeable in the movie and I even wished that I could also have her body so I could also noticeable. Maybe I just thought that "it's always the way it is", women can only be noticed in a movie if she's sexy and beautiful. I'm frustrated with the fact that they belittle the capacity of women and it was only the male characters ( ... )

A wrong image from media melcatot July 3 2009, 15:25:07 UTC
Media play a vital role in our society and when they create an image (about women-do the household chores, etc. ), people frequently see this as their impression on women. It is obvious that women are not given important role/s in media, because if there is then, why do advertisements for men (liquor, car) use women to persuade their target audience? Why do noontime shows have women that wear clothes that expose too much skin and dance sexy? It is like those women are part of the commodity or product that men buy.
We are in the 20th century, but it looks like there has been a minimal change about how the society treats women. Way way back, women were not given credit for their works (field of science), and less opportunities for women; but today media gave a wrong image to the society which was like they did before-they did not give women opportunities the abilities that we can, and prove to others that their impression or the stereotype was not true.
