revenge of the fallen: using the muted group theory to analyze the movie transformers 2

Edwin Ardener, Cheris Kramerae and their colleagues developed the muted group theory as a communication and feminist approach, because it deals with the exclusion of women in the mainstream and public avenues of expression. Kramerae posits that, since men are the dominant group in society, then their views and perceptions are also dominant (in ( Read more... )

A wrong image from media melcatot July 3 2009, 15:28:04 UTC
Media play a vital role in our society and when they create an image (about women-do the household chores, etc. ), people frequently see this as their impression on women. It is obvious that women are not given important role/s in media, because if there is then, why do advertisements for men (liquor, car) use women to persuade their target audience? Why do noontime shows have women that wear clothes that expose too much skin and dance sexy? It is like those women are part of the commodity or product that men buy.
We are in the 20th century, but it looks like there has been a minimal change about how the society treats women. Way way back, women were not given credit for their works (field of science), and less opportunities for women; but today media gave a wrong image to the society which was like they did before-they did not give women opportunities the abilities that we can, and prove to others that their impression or the stereotype was not true.

Women's big acts but no credits... greene_sparrow July 4 2009, 09:26:08 UTC
After reading this blog, my feeling of how great the screen play and the editing effects of the movie lessened :( Most probably because of the fact that I now got a clearer view of how the female characters are "silenced" and how rampant - even nowadays - the inequality of men and women in our society although at first sight this mistake wasn't given much of an attention since everyone was excited and thrilled with the story line and the flawless fighting scenes of the movie ( ... )

For me, the way women were presented wasn't really a negative thing for me because if you take a look into the brighter side, the film will not progress without the characters of the women and it showed a few positive characters of women. In the case of the first women mentioned, of course men cannot seduced another men. To all the women out there, let's face the fact that we are really the object of affection of men and of course their weakness. The mother in the film actually showed the real feeling of mothers who is in the same situation. It can actually open the minds of the mothers who have seen the film to realized that there is a time to let go of their kids. The character of Megan Fox was really the fantasy of every men out there. She's very sexy including her outfits in the film but in spite of it all, her character showed that women were supportive. I think we should be proud of that because we women are indeed very supportive to our male partners especially in times of trouble ( ... )

Yes, Megan Fox served as eye candy to the male audience and the mother of Shia's character was presented as weak and dumb. But towards the end they played a critical role in Shia's character to save the earth. They didn't have the same recognition as Shia's character had.

Oh I just imagined how women are discriminated in this film after reading this review, though I loved the movie Transformers 2, just not realizing that the girls character there were negative especially the mom of Sam (male lead character). There was a scene were the mom and the dad were having lunch i think, then the mom mispronounced the word "bonjour", though it's funny the way she delivers it but when we think of it, the mom seemed stupid not knowing how to pronounce the word "bonjour" correctly, I can say even a 4 year old kid can pronounce it correctly. I hope we could change this kind of image of women, we should prove to them that we can be superior to men because of our intelligence and skills to handle things that they think we can't handle because we're women. We can rule and rock and made them shock! :) - Margarette Ilarde ABMC 302A
