I got my bike today. The battery was bum after a winter-storage, so it had to be jumped. I was going to ride it until it was charged up again. But this thing got in the way ( Read more... )

Hey Ben, good for you taking the plunge, even if you ended up taking a plunge. Glad you made it without too much injury. Helmet visor/goggles/wind-protective glasses beat the snot out of on-vehicle windshields, IMO. You can call me if you get stuck! Also-- for fuck's sake, don't try to stretch your legs to limberness. After getting hurt you need to just rest those knees for a day or two. Um, email me @ moundgarten@gmail.com and I'll reply with my home and work numbers, and you call if you take a spill, okay?

I went full-face helmet, so I'm not too worried about wind in my eyes. More so are concerns about buffeting and bugs, but even with the damage it currently has, the windscreen seems capable for these purposes. It also feels kind of weak riding around with a windscreen that has a missing third.

Don't worry, I have enough sense to give someone a call if I need help, though I'm going to spend some effort making sure I don't have a need in the first (namely by being safer and NOTICING X( GRAVEL).

Email sent; hopefully after my legs are better we can start running.

'Cause I told you I would say it. dream20 April 27 2009, 04:43:38 UTC
"Silly Boy-o!"

Anyway, glad to hear you're okay and sorry that I'm not there to help take care of slightly bloodied boy-o. And this definitely means that I will not be getting on that thing until you get more practice and feel for the bike. Like the kind where you can take corners and not eat it. ^^; Congrats on checking another thing off your list of things to do in life and can't wait to see you in all your motorcycle glory!

I already have a car with at least four airbags (if I recall correctly). The bike is about fun, and adding to the list of things I can do. While I agree with you that motorcycles are more risky to life and limb then cars, part of this has been exacerbated by choosing too big of a bike for myself. Both physically and power-wise; if I had been more patient, I would have gotten a significantly smaller, less capable (especially off-road), and cheaper bike, instead of getting my dream bike first thing (...it had not 2000 miles on it, and was that many dollars cheaper than a new one would have been...). A lot smarter way to learn. I'm considering selling and buying that smaller bike, but I think I'm giving this bike some more time before I decide.

You are lucky. sly_cat April 27 2009, 21:54:00 UTC
Uhh... Have you taken any riding classes?
Hm, I wish I had thought to give you a special heads up on the intersections. Fairbanks has a lot of places that you will run into random gravel, even if the intersection looks good it's likely to have some.
Good thing you were wearing some decent gear...

My bike is a bit tall for me as well (Honda 650XR, dual sport) but I can almost be flat footed. I can pick it up if it lays down but my back pays dearly for it... heh, and I can only pull it off once a day.

I don't think I will invest in a motorcycle in Fairbanks though, too short of a riding season and the abundance of gravel makes it more dangerous even for experienced riders.

Hope your knees make full recovery.

Luckily I haven't actually whiped out yet, I had to pick up my bike due to a faulty kickstand... I was a little annoyed when it fell over the second time...

Yeah, I took the MSF basic rider course.

I wish I could flatfoot. I also wish the riding season was longer. Maybe I'll move down to Oregon or something someday; the riding season is actually a large attraction, along with more reliable pavement.

Man, looking at the specs for your 650XR, there's no way I could touch the ground at all on that thing. You might be a lot taller than me.
