Historically and cross-culturally prostitution has been illegal or restricted due to the fact that men in power were afraid legalized and free market prostitution would lead to men spending all their time and money on working girls/boys.

Not to mention that death and leave from syphilis and the clap are bad for profits/the war effort/whatever.

yes yes, there is that soldier issue as well. But in these modern days we could regulate the industry to safety and disease free standards. It will be a new clause of OSEA

Indeed.

For the record, I am thoroughly for regulating (and taxing) a lot of things that are currently illegal for no particular reason. Drugs and hookers would be a lot safer and the taxes would help fund the rehab centres.

I agree. When you take the profit margin out of things people stop doing them. I think the best example is the ivory industry. Ivory is scarce and dangerous to get and so price is high. People protecting elephants and rhinos and the like often remove horns to try and keep animals from getting killed but often they get killed anyway so the poachers won't waste time tracking a hornless animal, again. But, the ivory the protection groups take are just kept in warehouses. If they sold their ivory the price would go down and people wouldn't be so hot to kill animals. Although we'd have a lot of hornless animals.
