This is actually for school. Films about a journey of sexual exploration where the protagonist is a dominant female. Go!

I like Chasing Amy, but she's sort pre-formed when the film starts.

Thats a fair point.

I never really thought of Alyssa as especially dominant or submissive to be honest, but I haven't watched it in a while.

Preaching to the perverted was the first example I came up with when I started this argument with myself, but its not really about her sexual exploration, she is the instrument of his.

There's a facinating lack of material when you start to think about it. Specifically if you are looking for dominant females who aren't secondary characters or villians. Where their sexuality isn't a negative force.

I'm basically looking for films that counter the clear argument I am getting from my material.

Anyway back to the essay.

That is exactly IT.

I desperately wanted a film with which to argue against the overwhelming picture of submission or at least compliance.
It's has set of an interesting well of ideas both here and on facebook where I posted the same query.

I really should put this aside and write the essay that is due, and pick this stuff up later when I have time to really play with it.

It was actually the 'hot lesbians sex' icon that made me think of The Hunger...

I'm not sure if it quite fits the bill, but Labyrinth of Passion, by Almodovar? Not sure how much protagonist Sexilia is though... and it's been ages since I watched it.

I'll have to check it out, thanks.
If nothing else I am getting some interesting film recommendations with this one :)

Read the book, haven't seen the film.

I guess what I am interested in is the fact that female sexual power in film is almost always a sign of someone who is a villain, or going to punished in some way.
