I've not read any LKH/Anita Blake. Am I missing something? Should I add to my tottering pile of books to be read, now I have the time?

'But I do have a katana.'
But of course. "There can be only one!"

The series began well, with snappy detective themes. The early Anita books I'd recommend. Dodge the rest.

Give 'Sunshine' by Robin McKinley a try. A similar AU to Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire series but predates it...just.

Constantine (male lead) is the most unusual take on being a vampire that I've read. Sunshine (female lead) is human but with a bit more. AU links mortals, Others (revealed and incognito) and mental powers.

It's a one-off, you won't be hooked into a series. :)

Agreed. True Blood and the Southern Vampire series is good fun.

I haven't read the new ones yet, but yes, I agree: a tad less fucking and a little more plot (not that I'm being prudish, but even for me, it's a bit much sometimes). And yes, Jean-Claude does tease some interesting fantasies...

Living with Anita? Not unless I fell upon that katana... I like strong-willed characters, but she's a bit too selfish for my tastes lately. Though the changes (from prude monogamist to present) were interesting to watch.

The other one I absolutely couldn't stand to live with? Richard. His whinging self-hatred makes me want to stab him.

I find the idea that everyone finds Anita irresistable to be absurd. She's vulgar, ill-mannered and incredibly selfish. There's nothing attractive about that.

They say the toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success.

I too have a katana. I can make it sing. Sadly I haven't had the opportunity of late.

To keep on being a success. Indeed. Too many books too soon, in my opinion. Hence the weak plots.

You're still reading that series? Really? Based on the veiled, shadowy glimpses I've seen of your personality, I cannot imagine you curling up with a cuppa and the latest Anita Blake book. I'm fighting off a giggle as I type. ;)

I stopped reading those after the self-impregnating hermaphrodite showed up. And I got tired of Anita's all-powerful hold over everything male.

Even I descend from my lofty aesthetic heights on occasion, my dear. ;)
