What I did on my honeymoon

Holiday snaps"Going anywhere warm?" asked the driver as we lifted our cases onto the 7 a.m. bus. "Switzerland," we replied. We'd left a day between our wedding and setting out on honeymoon. We got to our hotel in Bern(e) the same day (well, night) after several hours on trains. I had a kirsch in the bar and fell asleep ( Read more... )

I notice in the photo of the meal you ate in Paris some of your food appears to have arrived in a preserving jar. What was it? I love that kind of silliness!

Fishes! All sorts of fishes, though you can only see the salmon. I'm really not sure why it came in a Kilner jar; it certainly tasted fresh!

I liked the pictures of the Matterhorn, and even went to Google earth to see where you were when you took it. Then I "climbed" the north face. It still has that mystique about it, even when done virtually.

What a good idea! The aerial view really makes it clear how Zermatt squeezes into the valley. Although neither of us skis or climbs, I couldn't help gawping at the sheer scale of the mountains wherever we went, and the Matterhorn's silhouette was as clear as its representations in chocolate.

you make Switzerland seem very open, and personal, and pleasant; but it's also clear that you had the most wonderful time in beautiful weather, so thanks for sharing that.

We were made aware of being in the tourist bubble by adverts in the railway stations for and against extending free movement from existing EU countries to include Romania and Bulgaria. The antis' posters showed ravens pecking apart Switzerland. In the event, though, the pros won the referendum.

Not that the wonderful experience we had was in any way false; but it's apparent that many Swiss believe their country's pleasantness is directly linked to its conservatism and homogeneity.

No honeymoon should be without scrabble :) Lovely to see your pics of the Glacier Express - makes me wistful that we didn't do it in the end last year.

Oh, I do hope you get the chance! Though seven hours may be a little much for/with a baby...

Seven hours? It's been 4 months by my reckoning...
