Too soon?

So, the Halifax Explosion was one of the major events in this city's history: in 1917, a ship loaded with explosives destined for the Western Front crashed into another boat in the harbour and blew up. Two thousand people died, 9,000 more were injured, and the entire north end of Halifax was flattened. It was the largest accidental man-made ( Read more... )

if you go to the nautical museum there's this thing that says a bunch of dead people from the titanic were briefly stored in an old skating rink on agricola street. That always creeped me out because the skating rink is long gone and I figured wherever that rink was must be super haunted. also, i lived on agricola.

also, if they're still doing ghost walks on the citadel you should go, they're really fun.

Creepy. Agricola is actually really close to my work (it's at Robie and Young).

I was actually going to ask you -- what fun things should I do in Halifax?

I don't actually remember what I did for fun there, come to think of it. We were poor all the time, so we just wandered around amusing ourselves, and I always found it was a good city for that. When I lived on Cogswell street, we used to go to the propeller beer brewery and get those $10 4 litre beer refills. It was fun because it was a block away. The citadel was right up the hill from us, so either getting a tour in there or sneaking in at night are also fun. Also, flying kites on that hill or tobogganing. man, i miss that hill. sometimes they show movies on a big screen on the hill too. I really liked going to both the Nautical Museum and the one with the frog on it, the nature one (i had a pass to that, hung out there all the time). Go get lost in NSCAD. Sneak into the graveyard at night. Go swim at chocolate lake. Explore the ruins at point pleasant park. I was there 5 years ago, so most of my favourite places aren't there anymore, but i'm sure The Coast will show you the way.

Awesome -- Propeller is probably the only brewery I haven't tried yet. And the graveyard at night is a good call. I love how in this city sometimes, at night, between the churches and the old tombstones and the old buildings, you feel like you're back in the 1850s...
