cabling around corners

Apr 02, 2008 13:59

Background: I'm just beginning contemplating designing a cabled fitted vest.  I'd love to have a cable that runs along the bottom.  I figure I'll need to knit the cable first and then pick up from along the side to knit the body.  Now here's the tricky part - I'd love to take that same cable and turn the corner and have it run up the front edges of ( Read more... )

I'd try the short rows

Sorry, I just re-read and I saw you were looking for other techniques. I don't know if it would work so much turning corners, but there is some very useful information in the following post for making cables travel. http://community.livejournal.com/knitting/6535435.html Maybe you can adapt it to make a gentle curve.

Elsebeth Lavold's book has at least one pattern that has a cable turning a corner. It's a been a while since I last looked at it, so not sure how she did it but my guess is short rows. I suggest having a look at the book as it contains some interesting thoughts on cabling in general. If memory serves, the pattern I am thinking of is similar to the second example you give. Your project sounds fun -- I LOVE vests.

one of the "edge" books by nicky epstein has several options for corners, including cables. sadly, i can't seem to recall which book it is, but as there are only three (knitting on, over and beyond the edge) it should not be too difficult to find the right one.
